If the Submissions Team recommends your manuscript to me, the publisher, then I will peruse it and make a final decision. If I like your book, I will send you an e-mail indicating that I’d like to accept your manuscript for publication, and I will send you a copy of the basic contract in order to begin working out the details with you.
Negotiations often take place by e-mail over a period of time until both parties are satisfied. I can also telephone you, if that is necessary. I try to make this work smoothly for the author. I am aware that contracts are complicated documents and that it usually takes time—particularly for first-time authors—for definitions and details to sink in.
I want Regal Crest to be a proper fit for you and your book. In order for that to occur, you will need to read the contract carefully and make sure you understand every aspect. Ask questions about anything you don’t understand. You are committing to a business arrangement for a period of time, and we want to make sure that the arrangement suits both author and publisher. Once we are both on the same page about all the details, then the process of editing, producing, promoting, and selling your work will go smoothly.
Key things you may wish to pay attention to include:
- A publication date is always specified
in Regal Crest contracts. Do not let anybody convince
you to sign a contract that does not give you at least
a "no later than" date for publication or they can
string you along indefinitely.
- The length of time that you are
allowing Regal Crest to publish your work will also
always be noted.
- The royalty history of my company
is excellent. Royalties are always paid on time. I
am proud of the fact that I have never missed a royalty
payment to my authors-not even when hurricanes
necessitated evacuation from our home.
- The author always has input on
book covers. Our top-notch graphic designers will
take your suggestions and ideas into consideration
as they create a beautiful and eye-catching cover
for your book.
- RCE has a rigorous editing process
to ensure the final book is of the highest quality.
You will, of course, participate in that process.
- All my authors are allowed to
purchase books for their own use at a discount. In
addition, I provide author's copies to you in advance
of the publication date so that you will have copies
for your own enjoyment and use.
When I am negotiating a contract I tell authors up front which specific details absolutely cannot be changed due to legalities or publishing requirements. Many other aspects of the contract are open to negotiation. We’ll discuss those other items about which you have questions or that you would like adjusted due to your own particular needs or desires. You can also talk to a lawyer well-versed in publishing law to evaluate any aspects about which you are unsure.
It is important that you are comfortable with and agreeable to everything before we sign on the bottom line. If you do not understand any aspect of your contract, please ask me about it before you sign it because once it is signed, we are both obligated to meet the terms for whatever time period was agreed.
Thank you for trusting your manuscript with Regal Crest Enterprises.
